Our Projects
NordGen continuously lead and participate in different projects relating to genetic resources. Some of them are listed below.

NaNoHorse
The NaNoHorse (Native Nordic Horse) project investigates genetic variation and relatedness within and between the Nordic horse breeds at a detailed DNA level.

NordGens project for children and youth: See, sow, taste
Where does our food come from? How is it cultivated and which plants can thrive here in our cold climate? In the project “See, Sow and Taste” children and young people can learn more about these important issues through hands-on exercises.

Crop Wild Relatives
A Crop Wild Relative (CWR) is a wild plant species that is closely related to a cultivated crop. These wild plants contain traits that may be important for manage future challenges related to our food production, adaptation to climate change and for the transition to a sustainable agriculture.

PRO-GRACE
PRO-GRACE is an EU-funded project to promote the formation of a European community for plant genetic resources. The project aims to prepare a concept for a completely new European research infrastructure.

Nordic flax
Flax is a crop with many uses that is suitable for cultivation in the Nordic Region. The public interest for Nordic flax cultivation has increased and in 2023, a collaborative project on Nordic flax began that was initiated by NordGen’s working group for industrial crops.
-
- Aktivt
SustainPotato II
This PPP-project brings three Nordic potato breeding programs and key public scientists to use available germplasm along with new tools for breeding potatoes with resistance to late blight and skin blemish diseases.
-
- Aktivt
RobOat
The PPP-project RobOat aims to improve future oat varieties by creating resistance towards different diseases, drought tolerance and resilience towards other extreme weather events.
-
- Aktivt
ECPGR ForEVA
ForEVA is a preparatory action towards the establishment of an EVA-legume network, which will eventually ensure comprehensive characterization and evaluation, of legume germplasm using a multiactor approach.

Next generation genebanking
Within the project "Next generation genebanking - Unlocking the potential of plant genetic resources in the sequencing era", NordGen and Aarhus University will map the Nordic collection of protein crops.
-
- Aktivt
Characterization of Nordic oats
In this unique collaborative project, hundreds of oat varieties in the Nordic seed collection are mapped to increase knowledge of the seed samples and their traits.
-
- Aktivt
The 100 year seed storage experiment in Mine 3
Since 1986, NordGen has withdrawn seed samples from Mine 3 in Svalbard (the Nordic predecessor til the Seed Vault) and analysed how the seeds survive in this environment.
-
- Aktivt
CResWheat II
The PPP-project CResWheat aims to support the breeding of climate-resilient spring wheat by identifying genetic resources for disease resistance, drought tolerance and important adaptive traits for the Nordic region.

Give peas a chance
The goal of this project is to identify pea cultivars from NordGen that are more suitable for plant-based alternatives than the commercial available pea cultivars and need less processing.
-
- Aktivt
For the cultivated diversity of the future
The project will develop new methods for how supplementary collections and innovative conservation can take place for the cultivated diversity with a focus on older culturally valuable plants. The project will also collect and preserve the new criteria and evaluate them.
-
- Aktivt
Swede Seed
The collaborative project Swede Seed will develop a system for seed production from wild plants of local origin for use in nature conservation.
-

3MC - Nordic Mountain Cattle
The interdisciplinary project 3MC - Nordic mountain cattle. Cultural heritage and genetic resources aims to map the heritage of the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian northern landrace cattle and establish collaborations that can promote their conservation.
-
- Avslutat
NordFrost
Within the NordFrost project, coordinated by NordGen, stakeholders will develop a regional action plan for Nordic cryopreservation activities connected to farm animal genetic resources.
-
- Avslutat
NordMilk
NordMilk established a network of research groups from the Nordic countries, with the aim of generating and coordinating activities on characterising milk from native dairy cattle breeds.
-

Arctic pea
There is potential for commercial pea cultivation in parts of the northern Nordic region and green harvest of peas is possible above the Arctic Circle. That is one of the conclusions from NordGen’s research project Arctic Pea.

NordMeat
The project “NordMeat – characterisation of meat from native Nordic breeds” is aiming at stimulating and coordinating activities that characterises meat from native Nordic breeds.
